About feeding a hamster
Hamsters are tiny omnivores that hoard food, which makes portioning tricky โ a full bowl doesn't mean a hungry hamster, it usually means a well-stocked burrow. Measuring by the teaspoon and checking hoards is the key to not overfeeding.

Calorie needs use the veterinary formula 70 ร weight(kg)0.75 (the Resting Energy Requirement), multiplied by a lifestyle factor of ร1.5 for a typical hamster at the life stage shown. Enter your own animal's details in the calculator for an exact figure.

What to feed
A good hamster diet is a quality seed-and-pellet mix as the base, plus small amounts of fresh vegetables and occasional protein (a mealworm or piece of plain cooked egg). Syrian and dwarf hamsters differ: dwarves are prone to diabetes and need low-sugar diets with no fruit.
How often to feed
Hamsters are nocturnal and eat mostly at night. Offer a measured daily portion โ roughly a tablespoon for a Syrian, a teaspoon for a dwarf โ and remove perishable fresh food before it spoils in the hoard.
Common feeding mistakes
- Overfilling the bowl โ hamsters hoard, so a daily top-up can mean weeks of surplus.
- Feeding sugary fruit to dwarf hamsters, which are highly diabetes-prone.
- Leaving fresh veg to rot in hidden food stashes.
- Relying on muesli mixes where the hamster only eats the fatty seeds.
Weight & health
Obesity and, in dwarf species, diabetes are the main dietary risks. Because hamsters are so small, even a gram or two of extra fatty seeds daily is significant. Check hoards weekly and weigh on a kitchen scale.
Frequently asked questions
How much food does a hamster need per day?
Roughly one tablespoon of dry mix per day for a Syrian hamster and about one teaspoon for a dwarf hamster, plus a small piece of fresh vegetable a few times a week.
Do hamsters overeat?
They rarely overeat in the moment, but they hoard โ so an owner topping up a bowl that still looks empty can dramatically overfeed. Check the hoard before adding more food.
Can dwarf hamsters eat fruit?
Best avoided. Dwarf hamsters (especially Campbell's and winter whites) are prone to diabetes, so sugary fruit should be left out of their diet in favour of low-sugar veg.
What vegetables can hamsters eat?
Small amounts of broccoli, cucumber, carrot, and leafy greens are fine for most hamsters. Introduce new foods one at a time and remove uneaten fresh food before it spoils.
