How much should I feed my pet?

Getting portion sizes right is one of the most important things you can do for your pet's health. Obesity is the most common preventable health problem in dogs and cats, linked to diabetes, joint disease, heart problems, and a shortened lifespan. Underfeeding causes nutrient deficiencies, muscle loss, and poor coat condition. The right amount depends on species, body weight, breed, life stage, and the energy density of the food you use.

PetKcal covers 30+ species using the same formulas used by veterinary nutritionists โ€” the NRC Resting Energy Requirement (RER) formula for mammals and birds, percentage-of-body-weight models for fish and aquatic pets, and prey-weight calculations for snakes. Our breed database includes 200+ dog breeds and 60+ cat breeds, with metabolic adjustments for known high and low-burn breeds.

๐Ÿ• How much to feed a dog

A 10 kg neutered adult dog typically needs 550โ€“650 kcal/day โ€” roughly 155โ€“185g of standard adult dry kibble split across 2 meals. Puppies need up to 3ร— more energy per kg. Working dogs 2ร—. Feeding guides on food bags are averages and often 15โ€“20% too generous. Breed matters too โ€” a Border Collie burns more than a Bulldog of the same weight.

๐Ÿˆ How much to feed a cat

A typical 4 kg neutered adult indoor cat needs 200โ€“240 kcal/day โ€” about 55โ€“67g of dry kibble or 200g of wet pรขtรฉ. Most cats are overfed because owners scoop rather than weigh. Wet food is strongly recommended as a significant part of a cat's diet for essential hydration. Sphynx and Rex cats have higher metabolisms and need more.

๐Ÿ How much to feed a ball python

Ball pythons eat prey weighing 10โ€“15% of their body weight every 7โ€“21 days depending on age. A 500g juvenile needs one ~50โ€“75g prey item (weaned rat or adult mouse) every 7โ€“10 days. Adults over 1.5 kg eat one medium rat every 14โ€“21 days. Always use frozen/thawed โ€” live rodents can seriously injure your snake. Prey should match the widest point of your snake's body.

๐ŸฆŽ How much to feed a bearded dragon

Baby beardies eat mostly insects (80%) twice daily โ€” as many as eaten in 5 minutes. Adults eat mostly salad (70โ€“80% leafy greens) with insects 3โ€“5ร— per week. A 400g adult typically needs 20โ€“30 appropriately-sized dubia roaches per feeding plus a large daily salad. Always dust insects with calcium+D3 powder and gut-load them 24 hours before use.

๐Ÿ  How much to feed fish

Most aquarium fish should eat 1โ€“1.5% of body weight daily, divided into 1โ€“2 feedings. The golden rule: feed only what they eat in 2 minutes. Uneaten food decomposes and produces toxic ammonia. Skipping one day per week is healthy and mimics nature. Goldfish need less โ€” 0.5โ€“1% โ€” because they're slower and have a lower metabolism.

๐Ÿ‡ How much to feed a rabbit

Hay should make up 80โ€“90% of a rabbit's diet and be available at all times. A 2 kg rabbit needs roughly 50โ€“60g of pellets per day plus unlimited timothy hay and 2 cups of leafy greens per 2 kg body weight daily. Avoid muesli-style mixes โ€” rabbits pick out the sugary bits and leave the nutritious parts, leading to dental disease and obesity.

๐Ÿฆœ How much to feed a bird

Birds have very high metabolic rates. A 30g budgie may eat 15โ€“20% of its body weight daily. A cockatiel (85g) needs about 6โ€“8g of pellets per day. Pellet-based diets are nutritionally superior to seed-only diets. Seeds are high in fat and low in vitamins โ€” birds on seed-only diets commonly develop obesity and vitamin deficiencies.

๐Ÿด How much to feed a horse

Horses need 1.5โ€“3% of body weight in total feed daily (hay + hard feed combined). A 500 kg horse at maintenance needs roughly 7.5โ€“10 kg of hay per day. Hard feed is added only when hay cannot meet energy needs โ€” for working horses, lactating mares, or underweight animals. Most horses at light work can be maintained on good quality hay alone.
