How much should I feed my pet?

It's one of the most common questions every pet owner asks โ€” and getting it right matters more than most people realise. Too little food causes nutrient deficiencies, weight loss, and poor coat/skin condition. Too much causes obesity, which is the most common preventable health problem in dogs and cats worldwide, linked to diabetes, joint disease, heart problems, and a shortened lifespan.

The right amount depends on four things: species, body weight, lifestyle, and food energy density. Our calculator handles all four โ€” and adapts the method to match what's actually appropriate for each animal.

๐Ÿ• How much to feed a dog

Dogs need between 1.0ร— and 3.0ร— their resting metabolic rate depending on life stage and activity. A 10kg neutered adult dog typically needs around 550โ€“650 kcal/day โ€” roughly 155โ€“185g of standard adult dry kibble. A 10kg working dog may need 900+ kcal. Puppies need up to 3ร— more per kg than adults. Feeding guides on food bags are averages and are often too generous โ€” especially for neutered, indoor, or low-activity dogs.

๐Ÿˆ How much to feed a cat

A typical 4kg neutered adult indoor cat needs approximately 200โ€“240 kcal/day โ€” about 55โ€“67g of dry kibble or 200g of wet pรขtรฉ. Cats are obligate carnivores with very specific protein needs. Many cats are significantly overfed because owners scoop rather than weigh. Wet food is strongly recommended as a significant portion of a cat's diet as it provides essential hydration that dry-only diets lack.

๐Ÿ How much to feed a ball python

Ball pythons eat prey weighing approximately 10โ€“15% of their body weight, fed every 7โ€“21 days depending on age. A 500g juvenile ball python should eat one ~50โ€“75g prey item (a weaned rat or adult mouse) every 7โ€“10 days. Adults over 1.5kg eat one medium rat (80โ€“150g) every 14โ€“21 days. Always use frozen/thawed prey โ€” live rodents can seriously injure your snake. A prey item should be roughly the same width as the widest part of your snake's body.

๐ŸฆŽ How much to feed a bearded dragon

Baby bearded dragons (0โ€“3 months) eat mostly insects (80%) fed twice daily โ€” as many as they'll eat in 5 minutes. Adults shift to mostly salads (70โ€“80% leafy greens and veg) with insects 3โ€“5 times per week. A 400g adult beardie typically needs around 20โ€“30 appropriately-sized dubia roaches or crickets per feeding, plus a large portion of leafy greens daily. Always dust insects with calcium powder and gut-load them 24 hours before feeding.

๐Ÿ  How much to feed fish

Most aquarium fish should eat 1โ€“2% of their body weight per day in dry food, divided across 1โ€“2 feedings. The golden rule: feed only what they can eat in 2 minutes and remove anything left over immediately. Uneaten food decomposes and produces ammonia, which is toxic even at low levels. Skipping one feeding day per week is actually beneficial โ€” it prevents bloating, clears the digestive system, and mimics natural conditions.

๐Ÿ‡ How much to feed a rabbit

Hay should make up 80โ€“90% of a rabbit's diet and be available at all times โ€” it's critical for gut motility and dental health. A 2kg rabbit eating primarily timothy hay alongside a small amount of pellets needs roughly 50โ€“60g of pellets per day alongside unlimited hay. Fresh leafy greens (about 2 cups per 2kg of body weight) can be offered daily. Avoid muesli-style mixes โ€” rabbits selectively eat the sugary bits and leave the nutritious parts.

๐Ÿฆœ How much to feed a bird

Birds have very high metabolic rates โ€” a 30g budgerigar can consume 15โ€“20% of its body weight in food daily. A typical cockatiel (85g) needs approximately 6โ€“8g of pellets or seed per day, or about 1โ€“2 tablespoons. Pellet-based diets are nutritionally superior to seed-only diets and help prevent the obesity and nutritional deficiencies common in seed-fed birds. Fresh vegetables should also be offered daily.

๐ŸฆŽ How much to feed a leopard gecko

Leopard geckos should be fed 2 appropriately-sized insects per inch of their body length per meal. A 6-inch (15cm) adult needs about 12 medium crickets or mealworms every 2โ€“3 days. Juveniles eat daily. Dubia roaches are an excellent staple โ€” more nutritious and less smelly than crickets. Always dust insects with calcium D3 powder and avoid waxworms except as very occasional treats (they're like candy to geckos โ€” highly addictive and very fatty).
